Following dental training in London, an MSc in Orthodontics and a PhD, Professor Sandy worked in various major centres including the University of Cambridge and the University of Bristol where he was the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and is now an Emeritus Professor.

For over 20 years he has studied cleft lip and palate conditions. He was responsible for research in the Clinical Standards Advisory Group, which in 1998 reduced 57 NHS cleft centres to 11 managed networks for centralised specialist treatment. He led research in a study with Cleft Care UK that showed that centralisation of cleft care improved outcomes for speech and facial growth by 50%. Jonathan has co-authored 3 textbooks, with over 250 peer reviewed publications.

Fun fact: Jonathan is now retired with a 4-acre farm in South Gloucestershire where he raises pigs and chickens.
